It’s not too difficult, but it takes a bit of time and you have to be really precise. When you make the carbon fibre composite, it takes a certain way of laying up all the fabrics, and then very careful manufacture to vacuum bag it before putting all the glue in that will bind your composite, which also has to be done very carefully. Breaking it is much easier! We put it in an impact machine, which is usually a small tower with a heavy ball at the top which is released at a high speed onto the composite. I can spend 2 weeks in the lab making a carbon fibre composite – and just 1 hour in the lab after breaking it!
